Commit to a Marketing Budget – As a business owner you have to make sure items like payroll, utilities and rent are always budgeted for which leaves items like marketing at the bottom of the priority list. It is important to try to set aside a set amount of money that you would like to spend on marketing, no matter how small. When you do, you’ll find that if you are spending this money on the right marketing activities, they will more than pay for themselves. Develop Your Marketing Expertise – There are countless resources on marketing available for free, you just have to take the time to take advantage of them. Even if you are working with an outside marketing firm, it is important to have a basic understanding of how marketing affects your business.  Hubspot offers excellent free webinars that you can watch on your own time following the live event.  While there are 1,000s of books on marketing, focus on reading the books that have been written within the past few years. While the principals of marketing have not changed much, the technology used and mindset of the consumer are constantly evolving. Don’t have time to learn more about marketing? Empower one of your employees to become the point person for your marketing activities. Try Something New – Marketing is always changing and you have to change with it.  Make it a goal to try at least one thing new this year.
